Chur Burger, Surry Hills

Walking up the laneway to Chur Burger in Surry Hills, it’s easy to think you’ve misread Google Maps. This alley doesn’t look like it has a place selling bargain buns-and-patties by a hatted chef. And, yet, just when you think the concept seems too good to be true, it comes into view: a graffiti-blitzed eatery […]

Albion Street Kitchen, Surry Hills

If you did an ID check on Assiette in Surry Hills, you’ll notice it’s not there anymore. It’s recently been recast as Albion Street Kitchen, shifting its personality from high-end restaurant to something more casual. It’s not quite as laidback as the eat-with-your-hands mess and joy of Warren Turnbull’s other venture, Mexico, but it’s more […]

Mexico – Food and Liquor, Surry Hills

Just when you thought you had overdosed on tacos and quesadillas, Mexico – Food and Liquor opens in Surry Hills. And while the outbreak of this cuisine has become so mainstream that even pubs and fast food franchises are tortilla-wrapping everything, it’s worth seeking out this new establishment. It’s run by Warren Turnbull (who has […]

Queenie’s, The Forresters, Surry Hills

If you’re looking for an escape hatch to Jamaica – you’ll find it at Queenie’s, the new first-floor restaurant at The Forresters in Surry Hills. It’s a culinary switch-over from the pizza and pasta that was recently served in this space. Credit the change to co-owner Jaime Wirth and executive chef Jamie Thomas (of The […]

MoVida Sydney, Surry Hills

You no longer need a boarding pass (or tolerance of long bus trips) to get into MoVida. The well-regarded Melbourne institution has just opened its first NSW outpost in Surry Hills. And while it’s less than a week old, MoVida Sydney arrives with a robust, in-built fan base – the type that will excitedly single […]

Gelato Messina, Surry Hills

Good news for anyone who has been on vigilant “Gelato Messina Watch”, the new branch in Surry Hills finally opened today. Like the Darlinghurst original, there are the dependable classics (Bounty, Tiramisu, Blood Orange) and the one-of-a-kind eccentric flavours that we gravitate to Messina for – such as Sexual Chocolate (which is so heavy-going you […]

Youeni Foodstore, Surry Hills

Sometimes you have to recompose yourself after discovering something you like a lot. So, after calming the hell down, I can finally tell you about Youeni Foodstore in Surry Hills – it’s now my new favourite place to eat. It’s the spin-off of Youeni Provides, which is a few blocks and sneaky footsteps away. Like […]

The Sandwich Shop, Surry Hills

Your carb intake is in good care at The Sandwich Shop in Surry Hills. This new eatery is all about finding interesting fillings for slices of rye, sourdough and bagels. Run by a cute couple who used to work at Bondi Pizza, this place just opened yesterday and offers versions of the classic chicken schnitz, […]

Little H, Surry Hills

Little H, Surry Hills

Little H in Surry Hills is the junior version of Bar H. So while it shares the same location as Hamish Ingham and Rebecca Lines’s acclaimed restaurant, it has a less grown-up curfew. Little H is open Monday-Friday, 11.30am-2.30pm, and is limited to takeaway only, but its short, supervised appearances are worth knowing about because […]

The Forresters, Surry Hills

Once the hunting ground of punters after a $5 steak, now The Forresters is the latest offering from Jaime Wirth. He’s the man behind the makeover montages for The Carrington, The Norfolk, The Abercrombie and The Flinders (Duke Bistro), and he knows how to extract fun and new life from fossilised, forgotten pubs. Now The […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.
