New podcast – Carlo Mirarchi, Roberta’s, Blanca

A near-death experience in Australia plays a surprising role in the launch of Roberta’s, the much-loved New York pizzeria. When Carlo Mirarchi almost drowned on the NSW coastline, it inspired him to rethink his career path – and galvanised him to help start Roberta’s in Bushwick. In 2007, it opened with such a minimal set-up […]

Bella Brutta, Newtown

It’s a telltale sign: over its opening weekend, I had pizza from Bella Brutta in Newtown three times. I guess I’ve been caught out being a mega fan? Not that I was ever going to be heavily opposed to the place: Luke Powell (LP’s Quality Meats) teaming up with Elvis Abrahanowicz and the Porteno team to […]

New podcast – Joe Beddia, Pizzeria Beddia

Joe Beddia makes “America’s best pizza”, according to Bon Appétit magazine. The chef/owner of Philadelphia’s Pizzeria Beddia has also been referred to as Pizza Jesus and the Jiro of Pizza. He shrugs off what he does as “just pizza”, but people would line up many hours (sometimes even arriving before Joe got to work!) just to […]

Madre, Marrickville

Madre, Marrickville

Madre in Marrickville opened last week and already qualifies as my new favourite pizza place. Maybe I’m a fast mover or maybe I was always pre-destined to be in its fan club, as this new eatery is from the excellent team behind Two Chaps – a venue I’m always happy to cheerlead for. Like its […]

Rosso Antico Pizza Bar, Newtown

We walked into Rosso Antico Pizza Bar in Newtown with plenty of in-built enthusiasm – when Jamie Nimmo of The Stinking Bishops gives a place a good scorecard, you want to fast-track your visit there. (Not only did he rate it well – “Finally, some good pizza on Enmore Road” – but ended up staging three visits in one […]

PizzAperta, The Star, Pyrmont

PizzAperta, The Star, Pyrmont

Don’t expect a carb blowout at PizzAperta, Stefano Manfredi’s new pizzeria at The Star in Pyrmont. You’ll notice that the bases aren’t just impenetrable banks of dough, but rather a light and springy support system for the smart, measured toppings that power each slice. Manfredi has made a big talking point about the flour he’s using […]

Coogee Pavilion, Coogee

Coogee Pavilion, Coogee

Coogee Pavilion is a one-size-fits-all eatery – and what a blockbuster size it is. This new venue not only shelters a pizzeria, oyster counter, grill section, juice stand, cafe, cocktail area and raw bar, but it also (somehow!) has room for a giant Scrabble board, 1950s ping pong tables, a theatrette, flower market, sea-themed library […]

Da Mario, Rosebery

You know how sometimes you’ll read a menu and every dish is stripped down to its elements, like someone trying to trap a good idea with a dying pen? Pumpkin Coconut Coriander; Broccoli Pecorino Chanterelles, etc. Sometimes I wish I could just write a blog post like that – Pizza Mario Rosebery Spin-off Go – […]

New eats: Bi Bim, To Mix, Darlinghurst; Sonoma, Alexandria and La Rosa Bar and Pizza, The Strand, Sydney

New eats: Bi Bim, To Mix, Darlinghurst; Sonoma, Alexandria and La Rosa Bar and Pizza, The Strand, Sydney

Bi Bim, To Mix, is a cute little Korean canteen that opened a few weeks ago on William Street, Darlinghurst, a strip better known for its cash-crop of hire/luxury car dealers. There’s nothing fancy about it, but you can get Bi Bim Bap with three sides (I like the caramelly potato and the veg-specked egg […]

Menu changes at Bourke Street Bakery, Alexandria

Like tragic fashion choices – if you wait long enough, some things come back again. So, I was keyed up by the Potato Pizza Revival at Bourke Street Bakery. The topping made a blink-long appearance earlier this year as a special, but luckily, the other week, it got properly added to the new menu. I […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.
