Adriano Zumbo, The Star, Pyrmont

The thrill of a kid hopped up on sweets – that’s the feeling Adriano Zumbo wants to evoke in his new patisserie. This outlet, located at The Star, lives up to his sugar-powered hopes: the interior is one long headbuzz of fun. Step into this wonderland and you’d be convinced you could troubleshoot the world’s […]

Balla, The Star, Pyrmont

Balla is a restaurant that could drive your eyeline crazy. With concrete “bridges” evoking Milan’s canals, pixellated floral columns, a ceiling that splinters into endless shapes and colours, tiled lettering and giant typography, pendant lamps that look like spinning tops in mid-twirl and futuristic racks of wine – every detail feels like a conspiracy to […]

My Sweet Memory, Sydney

“Dinner parties do combine two of our favourite things: dinner and parties. It’s like if you could have an Xbox pancake.” Andy, Parks and Recreation. I had an “Xbox pancake” moment when we walked by My Sweet Memory in the city yesterday. Amy and I had finished a great, slightly zany dinner at Chefs Gallery […]

Honeycomb, Darlinghurst

If you’ve ever been mesmerised by the blackboard at Cafe Sopra, entranced in a “can I order everything?” spell, then you will want to visit Honeycomb. It’s the new venture for chef Andy Bunn, who is responsible for this city’s dependency on his rightly famous Banoffee Pie. I’m not sure that any dessert could overthrow […]

Hinky Dinks, Darlinghurst

“It’s like a bar meets a ’50s house party.” That’s Will’s take on Hinky Dinks, which has just opened opposite the fire station in Darlinghurst. The retro-charged design, by Luchetti Krelle, is so convincing that some patrons find themselves mentally propelled back into their grandparents’ home – although, back in the day, it’s highly unlikely […]

Good Food Guide 2012

Sequels are meant to be disappointing, but my second year reviewing for Good Food Guide was infinitely more fun than any overlong Hollywood franchise. My “places to cover” list took me from Cabramatta to Palm Beach and I was even lucky enough to write up two restaurants that ended up in the hat-earning categories. The […]

The Bridge Room, Sydney

From the wall of origami felt to the meringue with strawberry paper, there’s so much to like about The Bridge Room, a new restaurant that’s opened near Circular Quay. Not only is the Strawberry Marshmallow Meringue ($18) a joy to eat, the given instruction that you need to smash it open with your spoon – […]

Joe Black, Surry Hills

Just when you thought Surry Hills was at maximum cafe capacity, along comes another great new addition: Joe Black. With a mural showing the evolution of human caffeine dependency, this place takes its coffee ultra-seriously. The blackboard offers two Single Origin special brews a day and a house blend, there are take-home packs galore and […]

Cara and Co, Westfield Sydney

Visiting the Cara & Co restaurant is like trying a spritz of tester-bottle perfume – a few hints are enough to transport you to a place that’s unfamiliar and alluring. The high-end DNA of this eatery comes from Moscow, where the original Cara & Co store was named “one of the best boutiques in the […]

A rundown of favourite new places to eat/drink in 2011 – so far

You could accuse 2011 of being a repeat offender when it comes to good new places to dine. Surry Hills is often the scene of this particular crime, given the location of the recently opened The Carrington and its likeable pintxos bar meets old-school pub approach; the truly excellent Orto Trading Co. (still titleholder of […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.
