New podcast – Donato Toce, Gelato Messina, Messina Creative Department

Yes, Donato Toce has gelato for breakfast. And he actually gets paid for it – it’s part of his job. He is the “cow milker, sugar hauler, head chef and gelatiere” at Gelato Messina, the much-loved Sydney institution that sells desserts such as Elvis The Fat Years, Robert Brownie Jr, Biggie S’Mores, This Is How […]

Messina Creative Department, Darlinghurst

Going to the Messina Creative Department in Darlinghurst is – hands down – one of the most delightful things you can do in Sydney. You walk in wondering, “is a seven-course dessert degustation really a wise move?” and walk out so cheerfully light-headed and un-anchored by gravity that you could basically be a balloon float. […]

Happy (almost) holidays and an update

So it may seem like I’ve abandoned mission control for a bit, but that’s not entirely true! I recently started a new job and things have been ultra-busy. So my clearance rate on working through the posting backlog has not been amazing, I admit. But the reason for the dust-collecting and blog weed growth is […]

Gelato Messina Dessert Bar, Darlinghurst

Gelato Messina Dessert Bar, Darlinghurst

The best-looking construction site in Sydney has to be the new Gelato Messina Dessert Bar in Darlinghurst. Lit up by neon glitz and filled with multi-colour rows of ‘assembly parts’ (fudges, jellies, sweets galore) and carnival-style equipment (a fairy-floss machine, a popcorn incubator), this build-your-own sundae establishment is a sugar-fuelled delight. In fact, it’s basically […]

New podcasts and more

This post is brought to you by a lack of sleep! And some semi-news … I recently unleashed some new podcasts. If you’d like the audio company, you can listen to me chat to: Andrew Levins, who accidentally became a one-man media-storm over the last day or so, thanks to Barry O’Farrell’s ill-advised lockout laws. […]

Create your own Gelato Messina flavour

We’ve all spent time in Gelato Messina, overexamining the flavours on display, wondering how the staff comes up with such inventive ideas. Thanks to FBi radio, you have the chance to create your own scoop-worthy concept for that ultra-popular ice-cream cabinet – and if you win, your flavour will be in store from June 7-14 […]

Gelato Messina, Surry Hills

Gelato Messina, Surry Hills

Good news for anyone who has been on vigilant “Gelato Messina Watch”, the new branch in Surry Hills finally opened today. Like the Darlinghurst original, there are the dependable classics (Bounty, Tiramisu, Blood Orange) and the one-of-a-kind eccentric flavours that we gravitate to Messina for – such as Sexual Chocolate (which is so heavy-going you […]

Gelato Messina Lab, Darlinghurst

Gelato Messina Lab, Darlinghurst

The Gelato Messina Lab is finally open. There are no test results or case-cracking white coats on show, just low-temperature patisserie treats. There’s an ice-cream burger, a “villainous” dessert called Mini Me (it deceptively harbours Dr Evil Chocolate, dulce de leche jam and peanut butter biscuit on top of a “grassy” base of pop rocks) […]

The scoop on Gelato Messina

Why do we love Gelato Messina? For its whipsmart, highly original, fun and incredibly scoop-worthy flavours: Elvis The Fat Years, Tiramisu, Absinthe, Hansel He’s So Hot Right Now, Apple Pie, Risotto Milanese, Yuzu and Pavlova are a few of the cone-perfect creations. Calendar specials have included The Royal Fruitcakes when Prince William married Kate Middleton and […]

Special scoops

Dog-eared novels aside, the best summer reading right now seems to be the specials board at Gelato Messina in Darlinghurst. It’s shot through with humour, surprises and unexpected characters – the King even makes a cameo in Elvis The Fat Years: his oversized waistline and appetite inspires a fatty mash-up of peanut butter gelato with […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.
