Not so Fast

Despite its brand-new status, the year’s start is always built-in with familiar features: well-intended resolutions (marked “Fragile” for their easy-to-break status); an amazing glimpse of what your life is like when it’s not overrun by office hours – a phenomenon that’s quickly eclipsed by back-to-work grumbles; and, of course, the beginning of Sydney Festival. I […]

Ms G’s, Potts Point

Just when the scorecard was already looking good for 2010, Ms G’s comes along and bumps the average up even higher. This year, Sydney’s been lucky to welcome so many brilliant newcomers (Berta, Duke Bistro, Bloodwood, Porteno, to name some of the fresh blood) and this place ends 2010 on a pretty dizzy note. Ms […]

Things we ate in Tokyo

Flower-shaped monaka from Toraya Tabi Bagel in Tokyo doesn’t have a closing hour. The shop opens at 7am and the doors shut once the last bagel is sold. Sometimes this happens in just one whirlwind hour, as I learnt through Justine. To visit this tiny bakery, you may have to play tough with the snooze […]

Holiday season

Merry Christmas! I hope your holidays are full of yums, none-too-painful food comas and that the company is good (or if the company = a compulsory obligation rather than mutually enjoyable, then fingers crossed that the food, drink and present-blitz makes it a little easier to put on that poker face). Right now, the air […]

Things we ate in Kyoto

For any Twitter-weary people out there, here’s a case for the defence: it helps you find amazing places to visit overseas. During a research-binge on where to eat in Japan, I posted this throwaway tweet: “In Japan, ham is considered a vegetable” -> OK, my attempt to find good vego-friendly places to dine at in […]

Opera Kitchen, Sydney

Yes, even the opening of Opera Kitchen was pushed back because of Oprah Winfrey. It’s amazing that the powerhouse talk-show host managed to make the whole country hit the pause button, but now that she’s left Australia, you can head down to lower concourse of the Opera House and check out this new venture. Located […]

Things we ate in Osaka, part two

I went to Enjoy! Cafe in search of a bear. Instead, I got a Siamese heart. And a snowman. Here, customising your coffee goes beyond just tapping in the odd packet of sugar; instead, you can request a drawing in your coffee: a rabbit, leaf or not-quite-scientific girl (really, a charming loveheart with a female […]

Latest MakMak macarons

Sometimes the surprise factor gets ironed out of Christmas, with so many things done on repeat mode from the year before (and the year before that). So a jolt of the new is a welcome schedule change. Thankfully, MakMak refreshes its line-up each season and has just introduced Ginger Caramel, Pavlova, Gianduja and the holiday-resonant […]

Things we ate in Osaka, part one

At A-Style Kitchen in Osaka, you sit under lights made from colanders or jam jars now onto their second (brighter) life. Things feel time-worn – but not old – and out the window, you can watch kids jumble through the park, grandparents cruising happily on their bikes or hipsters-on-wheels, zigzagging through as they juggle a phone […]

Japan interlude

This is a quick post to explain the semi-silence on the blog … I’ve been away in Japan and have only returned (with many samples of confectionery and green tea as return-flight companions). It’s a country that is greatly rewarding to appetites. Hopefully I’ll be able to post a few visual mementoes of the meals […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.

About

This is a blog about eating and drinking in Sydney, Australia (with the odd cross-border or off-topic detour). BYO appetite.
