The Fern, Redfern

The Fern, Redfern

Surry Hills has long been the natural habitat of the upcoming cafe, but, according to last week’s Good Living, Redfern may be (slowly) taking over. I’m always a little dubious when a suburb is pronounced as ‘hot’ – maybe because it sounds like slimey real-estate speak – but there’s definitely case-supporting evidence for this claim. I […]

Eathouse Diner, Redfern

During yesterday’s hoodie-plus-coat weather (with its bonus blasts of hair-tangling winds), I sat at the bar of the new Eathouse Diner eating a Chilli Sans Carne. The spiced stew of beans provided some smoky warmth (and also led to a few wimpy ‘this is hot!’ pauses). I mashed in the half-avocado that you get to […]

MakMak macarons, Redfern

Have you got macaron fatigue yet? Nevermind, as MakMak is here to respark your interest. While the business is off to a small-scale start (making cameos in some inner-city cafes, offering limited online orders), its current range is assured and impressive – these flavours are no warm-up act. My favourite is the Raisin Toast macaron, […]

Baffi and Mo, Redfern

A brilliant breakfast menu is like a knockout second album by a band you love: different and original enough to leave the critics a little dizzy, but familiar enough to ensure everything that drew you in the first place hasn’t been reprogrammed out of existence. So, you want eggs, sides, toast and the comfort of […]

Blog clear-out: part 2

If the name isn’t already a red (white-and-blue) flag, then the Brie and Tomato Croissants and Savoury Crepe Rolls will clue you in. St Germain Patisserie may be on a Redfern street corner, but its picnic-ready display will whisk you to a small patch in Paris’ Sixth Arrondissement. The Riviera Raspberry and Lemon Mousse Cake, […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.
