New podcast – Andrew Bowden, Hartsyard

Andrew Bowden is the “lord pastry master of Hartsyard“. You may know him as Andy Bowdy if you follow him on social media, where you can see the next-level desserts he makes for the hatted Newtown restaurant. This includes his ever-changing soft serves and pies – which incorporate everything from deep-fried cheesecake, wasabi peas, toasted […]

Cho Cho San, Potts Point

Cho Cho San, Potts Point

Cho Cho San in Potts Point opened last week to such mega-wattage interest – I’m surprised that a power surge and blackout didn’t immediately follow in the area. You could trace this highly-charged reception through the fast-breaking write-ups this new izakaya received – it was covered in SMH Good Food, Gourmet Traveller, Two Thousand, Broadsheet, […]

The Unbearable Lightness of Being Hungry zine

The Unbearable Lightness of Being Hungry zine

I made a new zine – it’s a snack-sized version of The Unbearable Lightness of Being Hungry. Created for the recent MCA Zine Fair; it compiles many of my favourite places to eat and drink in Sydney. It’s a bread-crumb-trail through the city that can multitask as a short guide for an out-of-towner or a […]

New podcast – Richard Hargreave, Momofuku Seiobo

This interview is definitely a contender for one of my favourite podcasts so far. Earlier this week, I talked to Richard Hargreave of Momofuku Seiobo about his upcoming Sunday Wine Sessions and his many uncorked adventures. I brought along some Bourke Street Bakery tarts (under the pretence it was “brain food”) and Richard proved to […]

Rising Sun Workshop, Newtown

Rising Sun Workshop, Newtown

In Japan, there’s a minor thrill in finding a ramen bar in unlikely corners – unassuming alley ways, busy railway stations, the turn of a street corner. Here in Sydney, you might reloop your footsteps once you walk by Rising Sun Workshop in Newtown and realise that this communal motorcycle garage does double-duty as a […]

Brighton The Corner, Petersham

Brighton The Corner, Petersham

Every week, Two Thousand singles out places worth trying; Brighton The Corner in Petersham made its honour roll in the recent edition. Major credit to the website for this discovery, because it’s a small-scale gem. The name holds a geographic clue, with this cafe sitting on a corner stretch of the inner-west suburb – right […]

The Potting Shed at The Grounds, Alexandria

The Potting Shed at The Grounds, Alexandria

The Potting Shed is the new establishment by The Grounds of Alexandria. Located only a few footsteps away from the more well-known venue, it’s a lushly styled bookend to the popular cafe – with a service that also stretches into dinnertime. Until recently, it had only been open for events. Luckily, you no longer need to […]

The Stinking Bishops, Newtown

The Stinking Bishops, Newtown

The Stinking Bishops in Newtown is named after the first-ever cheese to be judged as Britain’s smelliest. Although wheels of this infamous creation (which has the knockout stench of  “a rugby club changing room”) have yet to turn up at this new cheese bar and deli on Enmore Road, there are many other (less pungent) […]

Where we ate in Tokyo

Where we ate in Tokyo

Tokyo is a one-of-a-kind city – a place that launches you to the outer limits of the hi-tech universe, while rewinding timelines so seamlessly that its reverence for slower-paced tradition and ceremony also trips you out. It’s one of my favourite capitals in the world, seemingly built on standard units of things I love: good […]

Kim Restaurant, Potts Point

Having an incredibly common Korean name might seem like a surefire way to blend in, but Kim Restaurant in Potts Point stands out in many impressive ways. It’s a new venture by David Ralph (Flying Fish, Kakawa Chocolates) and Tae Kyu Lee (Mr Wong, Ms Gs), who both share impressive CVs and a not-so-common denominator […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.
