New meaning to "tea light"

Pictured above is a very cool teabag light by South Korean designer Wonsik Chae. Steep the bag into a cup of chemicals and it glows. The special “brew” that activates the brightness is not Earl Gray or English Breakfast, but Fluorescent Molecules. (My fave blend when snacking on biscuits.)

Enduring presents

For my birthday, I was lucky to receive amazing presents from some incredible friends. I’ve singled out two semi-food-related ones that deserve a bit of spotlight glow. The pic above shows this mind-stunningly intricate installation of paper butterflies, crafted by Tabitha and Nathan. Each paper cut features one of my favourite things – such as […]

Ruby’s Diner, Waverley

Hot chips are the edible equivalent of The Simpsons. It’s weird to know of anyone who doesn’t like either (although “later seasons” of hot chips probably don’t attract as many For & Against arguments as that 20-year-strong cartoon does). I’ve only ever heard of one person who could reject a bowl stacked with long, crispy, […]

Japanese eye candy

My friend Amy has started an awesome food blog while living in Japan. It’s early days, but already there are posts on the wonderfully eccentric goodies she’s found in Osaka. So far, I love the Hotel Mickey Cookies (see above) and the proliferation of strange KitKat flavours – such as Daigaku Imo (university sweet potato […]

Cruise, Circular Quay & The Summit, Sydney

January is a fast-disappearing month. It’s like the guest that leaves your party without saying goodbye. January makes such a whirlwind exit, I think, because there’s so much on (Sydney Festival, Australia Day, New Year’s, holidays, concerts galore) and all these events always come with a good excuse for eating. Anyway – the January blur […]

On FBI 94.5FM

On Weekend Lunch, the FBI radio show presented by the amazing Anna Burns, today. Talking about how to keep cool in this crazy heat. Ice cubes seem to be key.

New York through Lego, by the amazing Christoph Niemann

If you haven’t already seen it, you have to check out artist Christoph Niemann’s incredible recollection of New York through Lego. It was published in the current edition of The New York Times. A lot of the Lego references are – of course – quite New York-centric, but I’ve isolated a few of the food […]

The Falconer, Darlinghurst

Every TV show has a perfect hangout – the kind of place where characters linger forever and never get shooed by wait staff; with booths ergonomically built for conversations (and sighs) about complicated relationships or just light, fizzy, punchline-packed joking around. The food is smart and there are frappes you can sip with sass or […]

Potato pizza at Bourke Street Bakery, Alexandria

Being a complete Bourke Street Bakery junkie, I’ve memorised every single vego lunch option they have. So I had a nerdish heart-spasm when I noticed they had something utterly brand new yesterday: Potato Pizza with Rosemary, Spanish Onion and Ricotta. It was a one-off special and lived up to all the good meanings of that […]

Sweet reason to be a bag lady

OK, I already have many chocolate-box-sized reasons to go to Boon Chocolate, which is one of my fave places in Sydney. Just before Christmas, they even added a new passionfruit/caramel flavour, which had me re-ranking my most-loved chocs there. But now they’ve really upped the ante, with this gorgeous Flores de Mayo Chocolate Bag. It’s […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.

About
