Opening soon

So the year is almost over, but expect more ‘open’ signs to go up soon. You may spend your upcoming mealtimes at … Ippudo, which will be generating ramen steam-clouds at Westfield Sydney from December 6. (When the New York branch opened in 2008, Japanese news crews covered the event. I wonder if the Sydney […]

Kepos Street Kitchen, Redfern

Here’s a sweet story about the new Kepos Street Kitchen in Redfern. Michael Rantissi and Kristy Frawley (both of Bathers’ Pavilion) were on Location Watch, looking for the dream spot to start a restaurant. On the way to Waterloo’s Aldi supermarket, they noticed the vacant Strangers With Candy site nearby and remarked that it would […]

Bayswater Diner, Kings Cross

Since it opened last month, Bayswater Diner in Kings Cross has drawn attention for its playful, calorie-count-discouraging style of American diner food. There’s a “make your own sundae” option for dessert, where toppings include a packet-rip of Reese’s Pieces, M&Ms or Oreos; and if you look under the listing for Battered Onion Rings With Honey […]

Queenie’s, The Forresters, Surry Hills

If you’re looking for an escape hatch to Jamaica – you’ll find it at Queenie’s, the new first-floor restaurant at The Forresters in Surry Hills. It’s a culinary switch-over from the pizza and pasta that was recently served in this space. Credit the change to co-owner Jaime Wirth and executive chef Jamie Thomas (of The […]

Podcast with Jack Hanna (The Grounds of Alexandria) and other news

OK, so sometimes you get so busy that you need to hide out somewhere and unscrew your brain for a while. But, sometimes you also need to haul your blog into gear – just out of courtesy, you know? So thank you very kindly for dropping by, even if this joint has just been a […]

MoVida Sydney, Surry Hills

You no longer need a boarding pass (or tolerance of long bus trips) to get into MoVida. The well-regarded Melbourne institution has just opened its first NSW outpost in Surry Hills. And while it’s less than a week old, MoVida Sydney arrives with a robust, in-built fan base – the type that will excitedly single […]

A quick update

Here’s a quick snack-sized update. The Crave food festival started yesterday. You have just under a month to enjoy the many appetite-appeasing events that are part of the program. Incidentally, I did some Q&As with festival guests Ruth Reichl, Christina Tosi and Andrew McConnell, which you can read on the Inside Out blog, if you’re […]

Josophan’s, Sydney

Who doesn’t love an all-purpose chocolate shop? At Josophan’s new city store, which opened last month, you can find spiced drinking chocolate, nut-encased blocks, colour-splattered slabs of cocoa and, importantly, The Best Ice Cream Topping In The World (made of wafer balls, multi-flavoured chocolate pebbles and other crunchy, scoop-enhancing ingredients). There are also chocolate lollipops […]

N2 Extreme Gelato, Chinatown, Sydney

At N2 Extreme Gelato in Sydney’s Chinatown, the ice cream is a front-row-worthy spectacle. Unlike the usual vision of some poor staff member deep-cabinet-diving to wriggle a scoop out of a ginormous rock of gelato (and you praying they’ll be spared from end-of-shift RSI after all that wrist-heavy excavation) – at this new establishment, employees […]

Sydney Good Food Awards 2013

As I write this, there are probably Sydney Good Food Award-winners still toasting their victories and (rightfully) testing how much celebrating their liver can take. There was a whirlwind of new hatted entries at this year’s event (and, accordingly, in the new 2013 edition of the Good Food Guide) – major congrats to all of […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.

About

This is a blog about eating and drinking in Sydney, Australia (with the odd cross-border or off-topic detour). BYO appetite.
