Easter treats

My collection box of Easter memories is pretty small. I grew up with Buddhist parents, so I was off the hook when it came to the religious significance of the holiday. Mainly, I remember peeling foil off chocolate, and knowing that the little solid eggs were nowhere near as prized as the large hollow ones […]

MakMak Macarons Pop-up Shop, Newtown

You can now visit the beach without needing a towel, suncream and battle plans for finding an unclaimed spot by the shoreline. MakMak Macarons’ Pop-up Shop in Newtown evokes the surf with a store adorned with shells, floaties, beach balls (some mid-bounce), the occasional (fake) seagull and more than 100 kilograms of sand. And, to […]

Podcast with Jack Hanna (The Grounds of Alexandria) and other news

OK, so sometimes you get so busy that you need to hide out somewhere and unscrew your brain for a while. But, sometimes you also need to haul your blog into gear – just out of courtesy, you know? So thank you very kindly for dropping by, even if this joint has just been a […]

MakMak lamington macarons

Gold stars to MakMak for coming up with an excellent way to exercise your sweet tooth on Australia Day: lamington macarons. They come in these very gratifying flavours: Milo (yes!), Cream and Jam and Cream (the ones with the bonus red macarons on the side). They’re a limited-edition range, sadly, so you can either hurry […]

Birthday eats

One of the upsides of turning older: getting to pin birthday candles into something fun. I am not sure if this cake endured any instance of lighting or wax-melting but it sure was a party highlight. I think it even earned a round of applause! Someone who deserves many claps and cheers: Will, who secretly […]

Latest MakMak macarons

Sometimes the surprise factor gets ironed out of Christmas, with so many things done on repeat mode from the year before (and the year before that). So a jolt of the new is a welcome schedule change. Thankfully, MakMak refreshes its line-up each season and has just introduced Ginger Caramel, Pavlova, Gianduja and the holiday-resonant […]

MakMak macarons, Redfern

Have you got macaron fatigue yet? Nevermind, as MakMak is here to respark your interest. While the business is off to a small-scale start (making cameos in some inner-city cafes, offering limited online orders), its current range is assured and impressive – these flavours are no warm-up act. My favourite is the Raisin Toast macaron, […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.

About

This is a blog about eating and drinking in Sydney, Australia (with the odd cross-border or off-topic detour). BYO appetite.
