Kepos Street Kitchen, Redfern

Here’s a sweet story about the new Kepos Street Kitchen in Redfern. Michael Rantissi and Kristy Frawley (both of Bathers’ Pavilion) were on Location Watch, looking for the dream spot to start a restaurant. On the way to Waterloo’s Aldi supermarket, they noticed the vacant Strangers With Candy site nearby and remarked that it would […]

Bayswater Diner, Kings Cross

Bayswater Diner, Kings Cross

Since it opened last month, Bayswater Diner in Kings Cross has drawn attention for its playful, calorie-count-discouraging style of American diner food. There’s a “make your own sundae” option for dessert, where toppings include a packet-rip of Reese’s Pieces, M&Ms or Oreos; and if you look under the listing for Battered Onion Rings With Honey […]

The Milk Bar By Cafe Ish, Redfern

The Milk Bar By Cafe Ish, Redfern

You can expect “Burgers and Things” at The Milk Bar By Cafe Ish in Redfern, which opened on Thursday. The menu allows you to mastermind many variations on this classic order – you can “double up”, or even extension-build further and go for a three-level beef pattie/cheese/pickle/ketchup/grilled-onion combination (watch out for the lockjaw). You can […]

Fleetwood Macchiato, Erskineville

Fleetwood Macchiato, Erskineville

You can easily pick a fight over Fleetwood Macchiato’s name. In the week that this Erskineville joint has been open, I’ve already heard people slam its jokey title while others have hailed its punchline brilliance. What’s clear cut, though, is that this is a really good cafe. It’s partly run by Jai Pyne – a familiar […]

Youeni Foodstore, Surry Hills

Sometimes you have to recompose yourself after discovering something you like a lot. So, after calming the hell down, I can finally tell you about Youeni Foodstore in Surry Hills – it’s now my new favourite place to eat. It’s the spin-off of Youeni Provides, which is a few blocks and sneaky footsteps away. Like […]

Trainspotting, Lewisham

Trainspotting, Lewisham

Choose lunch/breakfast – Trainspotting in Lewisham is a brilliant new cafe. I wrote about it this week for Good Living and, instead of me replaying all the same observations here, I’ll sneakily direct you to my review on the Herald site. Along with Flood Street Carousel in Leichhardt, Trainspotting definitely tops the list of places […]

The Grounds of Alexandria

The Grounds of Alexandria

The Grounds in Alexandria is perfectly named. The title evokes the establishment’s supercharged interest in coffee, as well as its beautiful surrounds – an expansive site that is adorned with eye-catching blooms, aromatic herbs and hanging plants. There’s even a hiding place for some well-accommodated chickens. On walking in, you can tell that The Grounds […]

Japanese brunch, Kuki Tanuki, Erskineville

If you feel battle-tested by the idea of eggs and sides (again!) for weekend breakfast, then you’ll be happy to know Kuku Tanuki in Erskineville is now offering a Japanese spin on brunch. This sake bar has been doing cool things, neighbourhood-wise, since it opened around new year. Having just relaunched, it scores extra grades […]

Kitchen By Mike, Rosebery

Kitchen By Mike, Rosebery

For me, Rosebery has always been a suburb defined by speed bumps and 40 kph limits. It’s where I learned to drive as a teenager and it was full of L-plated kids being overly sensitive with the accelerator pedal. Driving instructors loved Rosebery’s enforced slowness; even wildcard adolescents couldn’t help but keep their teacher’s car […]

Cornersmith, Marrickville

Cornersmith, Marrickville

The first day that Cornersmith opened, the cafe managed to smoke out everyone I know from their nearby homes. Most new places are slow to be discovered, but this joint was full-blaze packed from the start. Maybe it says something about the pent-up hunger for a good new place to get coffee and breakfast in […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.
