That time we went to Attica (and of course, it was amazing)

There’s no shortage of proof that Attica in Melbourne is an astounding, standard-setting restaurant. It’s still Australia’s highest-ranked entry in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list; bookings for two for the entirety of December disappeared in 43 seconds flat when reservations recently opened for that month; and the most respected international chefs endlessly act as […]

New podcast – Jake Smyth, Mary’s

Jake Smyth knows a hell of a lot about burgers. Along with Kenny Graham, he runs Mary’s – which, despite only being two years old, has quickly become a much-worshipped Sydney institution. It’s easily titleholder of the best burgers in Sydney and inspires the craziest queues, even on the coldest winter nights. David Chang, who […]

Lotus Restaurant, The Galeries, Sydney

Lotus Restaurant, The Galeries, Sydney

Lotus Restaurant at The Galeries isn’t just a good spot for recovering from Muji-Browsing Fatigue, it’s a fine choice if you’re plain hungry, too. This 270-seater restaurant is the blockbuster-sized sequel to the tiny dumpling bar of the same name down at Walsh Bay, but doesn’t feel like a cynical franchise at all. In fact, […]

New podcast – Gregory Llewellyn, Hartsyard

Working at a restaurant run by the Mafia – that was no big deal for Gregory Llewellyn. In fact, whether it’s blitzing through 300 covers a service in New York, enduring sanity-testing celebrity demands for hotel riders or watching smoke clouds billow into parts of a restaurant where they definitely don’t belong – Gregory has […]

Textbook Boulangerie-Patisserie, Alexandria

There are no boring diagrams or charts at Textbook Boulangerie-Patisserie in Alexandria – just sweets so good looking that they deserve their own catwalk. There’s a Jaffa Cake ($8.50) that feels like a high-gloss, silken Chanel version of eating the choc-orange candy found in supermarket confectionery aisles – thanks to the satiny mandarin cremeux, airy milk-choc mousse, chocolate crunch and pain de gênes. […]

New podcast – Analiese Gregory, Funemployed

“Analiese, you’re going to have to move your car, we’re going to blow up your car.” This has to be one of my favourite-ever interviews – Analiese Gregory is one of the most fascinating chefs that I’ve been lucky enough to talk to. Not that working in food was an obvious pathway for her – […]

Highlights of Paris

If I had any control over clockwork, I’d rewind my life to the five times I’ve been to Paris or hit hyperspeed to some future trip where I’m there again. Even hearing the name of the French capital sparks an express trip in my head – a memory carousel of patisserie windows, park strolls, hours […]

New podcast – Matt Swieboda, Waterman’s Lobster Co

With Waterman’s Lobster Co in Potts Point, Matt Swieboda wanted to create the “Mary’s … of lobster roll places”. Here, Matt not only serves the classic American dish in both the Maine and Connecticut styles, but even includes a vegetarian egg-nori version that unexpectedly teleports you to Japan. (This roll is a delicious butter-mayo bomb, […]

Andrew Bowden (aka @andybowdy) is leaving Hartsyard

Dessert at Hartsyard means a spectacular sugar hit that not only knocks out your tastebuds, but sends your Instagram feed into a like-ratcheting frenzy. This is thanks to Andrew Bowden (aka @andybowdy) and his epic creations. But after July 19, this pastry chef is going solo, so make sure you book in for one last […]

Kepos & Co, Waterloo

Kepos & Co, Waterloo

Michael Rantissi has so many great ideas that he’s basically had to create a sequel to his much-loved Kepos Street Kitchen. Kepos & Co in Waterloo is his new spin-off: it recently opened footsteps away from the chef’s other restaurant. Both venues have flavour-vibrant menus evoking Mediterranean coastlines, but Kepos & Co takes a “more […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.

About
