Teriyaki Boy, Balmain

Amy Richardson – who started her wonderful Pretty Pretty Yum Yum blog while living in Osaka – is one of the most Japanese-savvy people I know. So when she tipped Teriyaki Boy in Balmain as her fave place to get her tempura/agedashi/sashimi fix, I knew I had to try it out. And yes, this cosy […]

Berta, Surry Hills

If you’re a fan of Vini, the wonderful (and squeezy) Italian wine bar in Surry Hills, then you should be excited about Berta. This new joint is also run by Andrew Cibej (who, aside from starting Vini and masterminding Berta, also has a bar-plus-wine-shop scribbled down on his 2010 to-do list). Berta is located on […]

Raspberry galettes, Anzac biscuits and remixed pavlovas

Last month, I went to a great talk given by Christopher The, who runs the wonderful Black Star Pastry in Newtown. (I’ve been meaning to scribble something on it much sooner, but life has had a funny, dodgem-car-like way of throwing plans off-course.) His talk was part of the Food&Company show on at Gaffa Gallery, […]

Sweet Treats from Frankie

When you were growing up, what were your favourite sweet treats?Louise Bannister, Frankie: I used to LOVE red frogs (still do), and I always look longingly at toffee apples when I see them in the shops. How hard/easy was it to collate the Sweet Treat recipes for the cookbook? Louise: It was challenging choosing which […]

After the MCA Zine Fair

I’ve been in zine-making hibernation for the last few weeks – which explains the less-than-speedy blog updates (sorry for being such a lazybones). It was all for the MCA Zine Fair, which was on last Sunday, so I can now resume my normal sleeping/procrastinating/blogging patterns. If you’re zine-curious, mine (Speak-easy #11) had a Frenchy theme […]

Breakfast degustation at Le Monde, Surry Hills

If you want to max out on breakfast, this is the finest way to do it. Le Monde in Surry Hills has started serving a breakfast degustation. For $25*, you get three inventive courses, two coffees (swappable for tea, if you’re not into ground beans), and multiple amounts of early-morning fun. The fine print though […]

Polaroid breakfast

We had breakfast at Clover this morning with one cool-looking chaperone: Will’s just-purchased Polaroid camera. It’s 30-something years old (but has no hang-ups about its age or career/marital/mortgage status) and managed to make our order look like it’d been served in the ’70s. After being talked out of my usual Baked Beans and Chilli Labne […]

A Q&A with Anna Lise de Lorenzo, of &company

The Lab, Anne-Louise Dadak Exquisite Corpse Recipe Book, Clare Flynn Food&company exhibition Have you always had an interest in food?My goodness, yes! I think I have to blame my upbringing for my love of food – my grandmother described us kids as a “league of nations”: our grandparents represent a heady mix of Italian, German, […]

The best

Like most ordinary diners, I haven’t been to many restaurants in the world’s top 100. I always like reading the list though – in the same way you might enjoy reading a catalogue of beautiful art you can’t afford. I also like how it’s a great chance to trade front-row stories with people who have […]

Bamboo Dumpling Bar, Surry Hills

Although I live near one of Sydney’s biggest ‘dumpling belts’ – where the supply lines of ingredient-plump Asian parcels of dough never run out – I was excited to learn about the new Bamboo Dumpling Bar in Surry Hills. The original restaurant in Potts Point has been serving up gow gee and won tons for […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.

About

This is a blog about eating and drinking in Sydney, Australia (with the odd cross-border or off-topic detour). BYO appetite.
