Trainspotting, Lewisham

trainspotting_lewisham_eggs Choose lunch/breakfast – Trainspotting in Lewisham is a brilliant new cafe.

I wrote about it this week for Good Living and, instead of me replaying all the same observations here, I’ll sneakily direct you to my review on the Herald site. Along with Flood Street Carousel in Leichhardt, Trainspotting definitely tops the list of places that I’ve had to cover for Good Living so far. It scores ticks for both food and drink and lands bonus points for the best home-made chai I’ve ever had. It’s beautifully sweet, with a pillowy froth and a mix of wildcard flavours (buttermilk and mandarin zest are some of the not-so-usual suspects you’ll find in the ingredients list).

Direction-wise, this is all stops to a fine cafe.

  1. Lee, I keep forgetting to mention it here but have you headed to Circa, at Parramatta. It’s near the train station. Coffee fabulous, little tiny hole in the wall that fits just enough and I recommend the sourdough with avocado and lemon oil. To. Die. For. It was recommended to me by a friend and I keep forgetting to spruik it. Well worth the train trip – and Parramatta has plenty of other surprises too. Best Banh Mi in Sydney at Bejamin’s Bakery, I reckon. A bargain too at $4.50.

Great name for a cafe. Love it.

I second that recommendation on Circa in Parramatta – it’s been around for about a year and it’s basically my second lounge room. A great cafe!

Thanks very much Lee! I live in a stone’s throw away in Summer Hill, so Trainspotting is definitely getting filed in the inventory under ‘must-go’. Especially if it’s one of your top picks. High praise indeed!

I don’t know what it is about Summer Hill…there are plenty of cafes, but there’s just no wow factor. The suburb definitely has that villagey, coffee culture feel about it, and the town square layout would make it a perfect location for the right place to flourish.

When I head there to do Saturday morning errands it’s really buzzing, but I just can’t get excited about any of the cafes there. Somehow there’s a lot of competition but it’s still all a bit lacklustre. If anyone has any light to shed on this situation please share!

So it sounds like Lewisham might be the ticket for a good local brew. My other ‘hood buddy has quite the penchant for a homemade chai…something tells me a visit to Trainspotting isn’t too far off. I’ll file Flood Street Carousel under ‘kid-friendly’ too! Thanks again for spreading the word to needy Inner Westsiders.

Thanks for the kind comments and the tips. Circa is definitely on my radar. Would love to review it, just depends on certain circumstances. Thanks for waving the flag for the cafe, Katie & Miss Piggy. It definitely has a fine army of supporters.
Passionpip, hope Trainspotting proves to be a good addition to the neighbourhood. One of the reasons the owner Cameron actually set up in the area is because he grew up in Summer Hill. Flood Street Carousel is indeed very good for little cafegoers. Hope you enjoy both and thanks again for your kindness. Always have an eye on the inner west, especially as I lived in Ashfield for the last seven years.

Wow! I lived on the border of lewisham and dulwich hill..used to take the train from lewi. Hmm interesting, must chek it out. Good review! Yes,me n wife liked circa but the owner did a renovation and didn’t open by day he texted us. V landed there and it was CLOSED!!! Anyway it’s a cute place and the owner is a nice guy! Still like it.

I loved this cafe. The menu has a lot of variety, and I like the furnishing.. it’s a cosy and relaxing place. Next time I’ll try those baked eggs!

Hey Lee, great review will check it out today. yesterday I went to probably the best cafe in Marrickville – Double Roasters. They brew and distribute their own coffee around Sydney, and the foods amazing.

  8. leetranlam says:

Thanks for all the nice comments, glad people are enjoying this cafe! Mohamed, alas, Trainspotting might not be open on a Sunday (I hope it was for your sake, but they didn’t do Sundays the last time I checked). Thanks so much for the Double Roasters tip, I only hear good things about this place!
