Holy Cow, Surry Hills

The menu-bait was in place. Once we heard that Holy Cow in Surry Hills served cherry and coconut naan bread, we snapped up a booking instantly (my aversion to restaurants with bad puns slipped into a convenient lapse). So when we turned up and ultra-fine-combed the menu and couldn’t find the dish at all, we […]

Bistrode, Surry Hills

At Bistrode, the Surry Hills bistro run by Jane and Jeremy Strode, what’s on offer goes beyond your meal for the night. You can also snap up the chefs’ cookbook (Two’s Cooking), and even stock up on Jane’s range of jams and relishes. But the French-style bistro can be very limiting in other ways – […]

Bentley Restaurant and Bar, Surry Hills

Sometimes a meal out can be so good you want to laser it into your memory so you can remember it forever. In fact, my first visit to Bentley Restaurant and Bar made my brain light up so much that it inspired me to start a food blog, ensuring that I’d have some digital keepsake […]

What writers and cooks have in common…

“People cook to bring something to the table; people write to keep something that was said there. I enjoy the company of cooks, I realised, because I love the occasions they create for conversation.”-Adam Gopnik, Through The Children’s Gate(as illustrated by a picture Will took at Pizza E Birra in Surry Hills, where the conversation […]

Vini, Surry Hills

For a lot of people, the best thing about work is the lunch hour. And you can tell a lot by how someone spends it – whether they’re eating heated-up leftovers “al desko”, mentally finetuning the perfect sandwich combination to order at the local cafe, or really splashing out and going beyond their allocated $8 […]

Two Good Eggs, Surry Hills

You know how you can infer from just one look whether you’re going to be good friends with someone you’ve just met? I had a similar feeling from my first menu-glance at Two Good Eggs. The name alone trumpets that breakfast is its game, and one that it aces like a star athlete. It covers […]

The Book Kitchen, Surry Hills

I really hate being sent to Salad Purgatory. It’s one of the pitfalls of being a vegetarian, being told that the only menu-compatible dish is a wimpy-ass salad. Now, I’ve got pretty militant salad beliefs — one being that unless it’s a salad with some substantial stomach-filling goodies (ie a hefty serving of lemon-spritzed haloumi), […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.
