Bread and Circus, Alexandria

At Bread and Circus in Alexandria, you won’t see a thousand clowns jam themselves into a tiny car – instead, your attention may be redirected towards “life-alterating” Callebaut chocolate cookies, drinking coconuts, “circus soups”, brews chosen by a “tea neurotic” and defiantly good salads. If you think a “wholefoods canteen” is a total killjoy – […]

2011 favourites

With everyone hitting memory lane at the moment, I thought I’d follow the same, well-worn path and revisit some favourite food experiences of 2011. The year has unlatched many great surprises, from the Three-Milk Cake at El Capo – the Ryan Gosling of desserts, because it somehow becomes even more good-looking everytime you see it […]

Cornersmith, Marrickville

The first day that Cornersmith opened, the cafe managed to smoke out everyone I know from their nearby homes. Most new places are slow to be discovered, but this joint was full-blaze packed from the start. Maybe it says something about the pent-up hunger for a good new place to get coffee and breakfast in […]

Wilbur’s Place, Potts Point

It turns out that there’s no cap on how awesome Bourke Street Bakery can be. The team behind that Sydney institution has a new spin-off, Wilbur’s Place in Potts Point, and not only is it great – you don’t need to practice your poker face when you get the bill. It’s refreshingly affordable: lunch starts […]

Gelato Messina Lab, Darlinghurst

The Gelato Messina Lab is finally open. There are no test results or case-cracking white coats on show, just low-temperature patisserie treats. There’s an ice-cream burger, a “villainous” dessert called Mini Me (it deceptively harbours Dr Evil Chocolate, dulce de leche jam and peanut butter biscuit on top of a “grassy” base of pop rocks) […]

Breakfast at Orto Trading Co.

From the people who used to make your weekend breakfast great when they ran Baffi & Mo comes … weekend breakfast at Orto Trading Co (a new thing, even though the restaurant has been open since April). Zero surprise: these guys still know how to nail that first meal of the day. You can order good […]

Momofuku Seiobo, The Star, Pyrmont

There was megawatt hype surrounding Momofuku Seiobo before it even opened a few weeks ago, and the restaurant didn’t so much quietly launch as blast off. With supercharged interest in David Chang’s new Sydney venture – his first outside his New York empire – every minor move and detail was reported on before diners even […]

Fratelli Fresh, Bridge St, Sydney

Sydney seems to have a limitless addiction to Fratelli Fresh and the new outlet that opened today in the city is only going to refuel that fixation. Hidden in a sandstone basement opposite the stock exchange, it expands on the usual “Cafe Sopra plus gourmet grocer” template with a mozzarella bar, where you can order […]

A Q&A with Alon Sharman, Arras

Prior to being the restaurant manager and head sommelier at Arras, you were at Quay. What were some standout memories from your time there?Choosing wine for U2; chasing Russian President Putin’s minders for an outstanding account of $17000 (which they paid in cash); having to justify the decor to guests – in one instance, a […]

Wedge Espresso, Glebe

The name is a giveaway – coffee is the lifeblood of Wedge Espresso. This new Glebe cafe also does a fine sideline in other sip-worthy drinks: there’s the Ice Milo ($5), with its crunchy landmass of malt grains afloat milk and ice-cream. At the bottom is a genius ground-level layer of Milo – so there’s […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.

About

This is a blog about eating and drinking in Sydney, Australia (with the odd cross-border or off-topic detour). BYO appetite.
