Avido, Paddington

I found out about Avido, Paddington, through Six Degrees of Restaurant Separation. The interior here is partly the work of Matt Woods, the Newtown-based designer behind Bloodwood, known for its attention-snatching use of vivid colours, reclaimed textures and a love of sticking doors in unexpected places. At Avido, the look is more subdued, with soft […]

Bruschetteria 102, Surry Hills

If you’re bored with toast, then head to Bruschetteria 102 in Surry Hills – it will flare up your enthusiasm for grilled bread. As the name suggests, this Italian cafe offers many oil-drizzled variations on bruschetta, with charming and likeable results. If you’re in a breakfast mood, you can get a serve of the Will-approved […]

Berta, Surry Hills

If you’re a fan of Vini, the wonderful (and squeezy) Italian wine bar in Surry Hills, then you should be excited about Berta. This new joint is also run by Andrew Cibej (who, aside from starting Vini and masterminding Berta, also has a bar-plus-wine-shop scribbled down on his 2010 to-do list). Berta is located on […]

The Pasta Factory, Leichhardt

The window display is full of multi-colour pasta strands spilling out like uncontrollable ribbons. The colour spectrum runs from chilli-red tagliolini to spinach-green fettucine. And, for the very first time I’ve walked past it, it’s actually open (a fact that says more about my anti-social weekend sleeping patterns than the shop’s hours). Of course, I […]

A Tavola, again (Or… When Cupid Comes To Dinner)

Every year, I wonder how a priest who was clobbered to death ended up being the poster guy for romance. And every year, I never quite get around to finding out. I should probably make a better effort, given that my (cough) birthday falls on Valentine’s Day, but hey it also coincides with International Mullet […]

Vini, Surry Hills

For a lot of people, the best thing about work is the lunch hour. And you can tell a lot by how someone spends it – whether they’re eating heated-up leftovers “al desko”, mentally finetuning the perfect sandwich combination to order at the local cafe, or really splashing out and going beyond their allocated $8 […]

A Tavola, Darlinghurst

A Tavola, Darlinghurst

We were involved in a eat-and-run incident last week at A Tavola. We had less than an hour to zip in, eat up and dash off to see Tiger Country, a play at The Stables Theatre which Will had taken some cast photos of. And of course I had to be greedy and complicate things […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.
