Pocket Bar, Darlinghurst

Like a very incriminating receipt you excavate from your pants when doing laundry – timestamping the last time you actually gave the pair a clean – I must admit I’ve had this review scrunched up in my pocket for a while. It’s kinda silly and I can’t quite explain it (the same way it’s hard […]

Sweet treats for Spring

Sweet treats for Spring

Just been on Anna Burns’ great Weekend Lunch show on FBI 94.5FM talking about sweet treats for Spring. We talked about Sweetness, the patisserie that is best-known for its shelves of artisan marshmallows, located on Oxford Street in Epping. And Bacco in Chifley Plaza. And Pocket Bar in Darlinghurst. And the new Bourke Street Bakery […]

Hot Chocolate On A Stick, from Boon Chocolates, Darlinghurst

Sure, it’s hibernation weather right now, but it’s worth bracing snap-freeze temperatures to secure a take-home hot chocolate pack from Boon, Darlinghurst. For $8.50, you get a little bag with two ‘hot chocolate popsicles’. Melt the choc in half a cup of milk and add the remaining half-cup when the choc starts slinking off the […]

The Local Taphouse, Darlinghurst

The Local Taphouse, Darlinghurst

A few things I like about The Local Taphouse in Darlinghurst … -Until recently, if you had to do a police-style sketch of a beer enthusiast, you might easily draw up someone a little red-faced and aggro: a person whose physical appearance basically blared “avoid for your own safety” and “don’t invite to next party”. […]

An easter egg hunt from A-B: Adora, Adriano Zumbo, Belle Fleur and Boon

An easter egg hunt from A-B: Adora, Adriano Zumbo, Belle Fleur and Boon

Buying a jumbo bag of supermarket Easter eggs and leaving a Hansel & Gretel-esque trail of coloured foil around your living room is pretty much a major tradition at this time of year. I’m as happy as anyone else to leave crinkly metallic scraps of yellow and pink “eggshell” around, but I also like the […]

The Falconer, Darlinghurst

The Falconer, Darlinghurst

Every TV show has a perfect hangout – the kind of place where characters linger forever and never get shooed by wait staff; with booths ergonomically built for conversations (and sighs) about complicated relationships or just light, fizzy, punchline-packed joking around. The food is smart and there are frappes you can sip with sass or […]

Sweet reason to be a bag lady

Sweet reason to be a bag lady

OK, I already have many chocolate-box-sized reasons to go to Boon Chocolate, which is one of my fave places in Sydney. Just before Christmas, they even added a new passionfruit/caramel flavour, which had me re-ranking my most-loved chocs there. But now they’ve really upped the ante, with this gorgeous Flores de Mayo Chocolate Bag. It’s […]

Boon Chocolates, Darlinghurst

When the city you live in is so well-mapped in your head – with every laneway and street corner worn out by your autopilot gaze – it’s nice to be revived by something new. I love it when a discovery jumpstarts your enthusiasm for the geography around you; how finding a string of unfamiliar gems […]

Strangers With Candy, Redfern (and other Sunday breakfast spots)

Strangers With Candy, Redfern (and other Sunday breakfast spots)

Eating out for breakfast is one of those great weekend-centric activities (along with sleeping in lots, being a night owl with your friends and doing regrettable things that you have a whole extra day to get over). So it’s weird that a lot of breakfast places are closed on Sundays (all you get is extra […]

A Tavola, again (Or… When Cupid Comes To Dinner)

A Tavola, again (Or… When Cupid Comes To Dinner)

Every year, I wonder how a priest who was clobbered to death ended up being the poster guy for romance. And every year, I never quite get around to finding out. I should probably make a better effort, given that my (cough) birthday falls on Valentine’s Day, but hey it also coincides with International Mullet […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.
