Bad Hombres, Surry Hills

“I don’t know what I’m eating, but it tastes amazing,” my friend Tabitha says about the menu at Bad Hombres in Surry Hills. You don’t need to carry out an intelligence operation to enjoy the dishes here – the tacos and quesadillas are optimised for strong rat-a-tat bursts of flavour that’d score well on any […]

New podcast – Jill Dupleix, Australia’s Top 100 Restaurants

Jill Dupleix grew up as the daughter of a sheep farmer and took an unusual route to becoming a food writer – it involved a phone book, a bike ride and a stint in the world of advertising. And meeting Terry Durack: “We hated each other on sight.” They not only married each other, they […]

Sydney Table 2017

This recap of Sydney Table 2017 includes a nailgun accident, edible gold and clay and a 30-metre floating herb installation. And, of course, chefs getting up to creative mischief with artists. The combined wattage of these pairings was what gave this event such star power. It’s the second year that Carriageworks has staged this series […]

New podcast – Clayton Wells, Automata

“It was pretty crazy, actually,” says Clayton Wells about opening Momofuku Seiobo in 2011, but he could also be describing the incredible response to his solo restaurant Automata. Since Automata’s launch in late 2015, Clayton has been named Australia’s Hottest Chef by The Weekend Australian magazine, Time Out Sydney gave him their Chef of the […]

New zine – Speak-easy #14: the work issue

While I’m looking for a new job, I hope it’s not too shameless to shill copies of my latest zine? I guess the theme is “work”, so that makes it semi-appropriate, right? It was produced for the most recent MCA Zine Fair and here’s a not-so-executive summary on its contents … It’s possible to get […]

New podcast – Nikki To, Food Photographer

Nikki To’s first shoots involved helicopters – an interesting challenge as she is “kind of afraid of heights”! Becoming a food photographer was an unlikely progression from her original plans to be a human rights lawyer, but her eventual career path led to her work appearing in Broadsheet, Gourmet Traveller, the Qantas in-flight mag and even Swedish Gourmet […]

The Lansdowne, Chippendale

Watching The Lansdowne rebound and regenerate into Sydney’s new favourite venue is now my favourite spectator sport. Last rites were read for the Chippendale pub back in August 2015, when the 1930s building was set to be developed into a private music school – and many people read this as certification that, yet again, Sydney […]

New podcast – Mike McEnearney, Kitchen By Mike, No 1 Bent St, Carriageworks

Mike McEnearney’s career has been full of surprising turns. Sure, he’s worked for Neil Perry and Gordon Ramsay – but also for Damien Hirst, running the controversial artist’s Pharmacy restaurant, where even the toilets were unlike anything you’d predict. He’s been involved with hatted and Michelin-starred restaurants, but also sold home-made bread in the car park […]

Restaurant Sasaki, Surry Hills

You no longer need to make travel arrangements to end up in Japan – the most direct route involves just a few footsteps down a Surry Hills alley. Restaurant Sasaki feels exactly like a place you’d chance upon in a country that has a world-beating habit of hiding great eateries in modest locations. The more […]

New podcast – Phil Gandevia, Bentley Restaurant & Bar, Eau de Vie, The Roosevelt

A cocktail inspired by Charles Dickens? Or experimental beverages that include Weet Bix milk or charred Jerusalem artichoke? These are just some examples of Phil Gandevia’s highly inventive work – he’s an award-winning bartender who modestly describes himself as “the bar guy” at Bentley Restaurant & Bar, but there’s no other person I would trust […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.

About
