The Fern, Redfern

Surry Hills has long been the natural habitat of the upcoming cafe, but, according to last week’s Good Living, Redfern may be (slowly) taking over. I’m always a little dubious when a suburb is pronounced as ‘hot’ – maybe because it sounds like slimey real-estate speak – but there’s definitely case-supporting evidence for this claim. I […]

Birthday eats

One of the upsides of turning older: getting to pin birthday candles into something fun. I am not sure if this cake endured any instance of lighting or wax-melting but it sure was a party highlight. I think it even earned a round of applause! Someone who deserves many claps and cheers: Will, who secretly […]

Vacanza Pizzeria, Charing Cross

Have you ever had pizza so good that it wipes out your memory? Vacanza in Charing Cross had this effect on me. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a slice so much. It’s much easier to recall all the bad pizzas – the greasetraps with a crust; the dough overkill; the pile-up of […]

Everyday Eats

There’s a new food guide out. Called Everyday Eats, it features 450 wallet-friendly feeds from across Sydney. Edited by the wonderful Angie Schiavone (former regional editor of the Good Food Guide and eternal titleholder of best person to ask about dumplings in Ashfield), it lets you know where you can get a good hunger-sating return […]

Soba, thanks

In case you ever get Dumpling Burnout in Ashfield, it’s good to know that there’s an alternative to jiaozi and wontons on Liverpool Road. A new Japanese place has opened and I sure hope it has a longer survival rate than the previous sushi and udon eatery that sprung up (and just as quickly vanished). […]

Greenhouse by Joost, Sydney

Greenhouse by Joost has turned up in Sydney with some heavyweight publicity. No surprise – its attention-seeking cleverness justifies all the high-exposure coverage. This shipping-container-turned-pop-up-eco-cafe has inventively reworked everything from jam jars (as lighting and drinking glasses), and conveyor belts (as flooring) and its inspired sustainability has you continually playing a game of “guess-what-this-was-before”? (Before: […]

Arras again

It’s hard not to be knocked out at Restaurant Arras. Every dish seems to blaze with high-resolution colour and the flavours are just as carefully, exquisitely rendered: elegant, playful and thrill-seeking. I’ve already written about this great restaurant but it’s difficult not to re-praise the people who cast this dinner-long spell on us: the incredibly […]

The Devonshire, Surry Hills

There’s no mystery as to how this restaurant got its name, but The Devonshire is still sharp-witted enough to catch diners by surprise. Located near the point where Steel Street sneaks into Devonshire in Surry Hills (or as your mental GPS will calculate it: footsteps away from The Shakespeare Hotel), this new establishment takes its […]

Special scoops

Dog-eared novels aside, the best summer reading right now seems to be the specials board at Gelato Messina in Darlinghurst. It’s shot through with humour, surprises and unexpected characters – the King even makes a cameo in Elvis The Fat Years: his oversized waistline and appetite inspires a fatty mash-up of peanut butter gelato with […]

Little Brekkies, A Little On The Side

Sometimes deciding what you’d like to eat can lead to an endless loop of counter-arguments. How nice it’d be to just order everything on offer and sort it out according to whim and appetite. With the “Little Brekkies” menu at A Little On The Side in Darlington, with half-serve portions from $5.50 to $9 each, […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.

About

This is a blog about eating and drinking in Sydney, Australia (with the odd cross-border or off-topic detour). BYO appetite.
