New zine: Unbearable Lightness of Being Hungry 2015 edition

Here’s a new zine! It’s an update of last year’s The Unbearable Lightness of Being Hungry publication and I created it for the recent MCA Zine Fair. Consider it a snack-sized version of this blog and or a neat track listing of my favourite places to eat and drink in Sydney. It can multitask as […]

Mary’s Kebabs at Cliff Dive, Darlinghurst

Update: sadly, Mary’s Kebabs is no longer running at Cliff Dive – but will be popping up at other events and venues. Follow ’em on Instagram to see where they’ll be next.  You can still get your Mary’s fix in Newtown and the Sydney CBD, though! Mary’s is a repeat offender at making the city more awesome […]

Besser, Surry Hills

You wouldn’t want to throw a brick through the window of Besser in Surry Hills, it already has a tidy collection of 96 Besser blocks that line up its bar. But your reflexes will probably lean more towards the bouquets and applause end of the spectrum, instead of projectile-launching mode (plus, that kind of thuggish […]

New podcast – Dan Barber and Eric Kayser

Where do you even begin when listing Dan Barber‘s achievements? You could point out that he’s the award-winning chef behind the Blue Hill & Blue Hill At Stone Barns restaurants in New York. Or note that Time included him in their list of the World’s 100 Most Influential People (with a write-up by Ferran Adria, no less). […]

Five Points Burgers, North Sydney

OK, I’ll admit, when I first heard there was a new burger joint in North Sydney, my reaction was definitely in ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ territory. Then I learnt that Five Points Burgers was Tomislav Martinic’s new consulting venture, and my attention was suddenly in a head lock. This was a huge deal. Sure, some coverage has name-checked […]

New podcast – Mitch Orr, ACME

Mitch Orr got into cooking after realising there were plenty of perks to studying food tech in high school (such as being the only dude in the class). Scoring an extra lunch as a byproduct didn’t hurt, either. Jamie Oliver’s TV show only added to the appeal of mastering recipes. Mitch went on to become […]

Dr Faustus, Surry Hills

Dr Faustus in Surry Hills offers fast-acting relief against hunger, thirst and cafe-menu fatigue. With its inventive offerings – from an addictive Pulled Mushroom Bun ($14) to its Australian take on cereal milks – this establishment brings a booster shot of originality to the Sydney dining scene. In fact, it’s an excellent prescription for anyone […]

Subcontinental, Surry Hills

Subcontinental in Surry Hills spells out its direction as clearly as a compass: walk in and there are photos from The Singh Project; cocktails are christened after prominent South Asian cricketers (you an bat for a Sourav Sour, Miandad Punch, Murali Negroni, etc); and the regional familiarities – such as Samosas ($5 a serve), Vego […]

New podcast – Levins, TwoThousand

In the year since I first talked to Andrew Levins on my podcast, he’s notched up some major achievements – such as becoming a dad and accidentally ending up as the face of the opposition to Barry O’Farrell’s lockout laws. He also closed The Dip (where he found himself making 200 burgers in an hour) […]

The Gretz, Enmore

Even before the team from Hartsyard opened its new bar in Enmore, I think we were all already pre-enrolled in The Gretz Fan Club. Owners Naomi Hart and Gregory Llewellyn have deservedly gained a huge, unshakeable following for their original venture in Newtown – where Hartsyard’s supersized flavours (and charms) can still conjure a wait […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.

About

This is a blog about eating and drinking in Sydney, Australia (with the odd cross-border or off-topic detour). BYO appetite.
