New podcast – Lauren Eldridge, Pei Modern, Marque

In the last year, Lauren Eldridge has worked at the world’s best restaurant (Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana), impressed the greatest living Italian chef with fairy bread and a punch to the face, whipped dessert with ropes in India and rolled croissants in Paris with Guy Savoy, the ‘magician of French cuisine’. Not bad for someone […]

Auto.Lab, Chippendale

You always knew that Auto.Lab in Chippendale wasn’t going to deliver your regular scheduled programming when it came to brunch menus. After all, the Automata spin-off (which takes over Silvereye’s vacant site at The Old Clare) is run by some high-powered talent and they’re not going to resort to lazy avocado on toast and other […]

New podcast – Mike Bennie, Rootstock

In a past life, Mike Bennie used to help famous figures like Russell Crowe, A Tribe Called Quest, Baby John Burgess, as well as (future Prime Minister) Malcolm Turnbull and then Lord Mayor Lucy Turnbull pick wines. The Rootstock Sydney co-founder and award-winning wine communicator takes us on a few flashbacks to that memorable time […]

New podcast – Nancy Singleton Hachisu, Preserving the Japanese Way and Japanese Farm Food

Arriving as an exchange student from California, Nancy Singleton Hachisu originally planned a short visit to Japan, but 26 years later – she’s still there. A relationship with a Japanese organic farmer is what upended her plans and saw her settling into an 80-something-old farmhouse that’s been passed down his family for multiple generations. During […]

Messina Creative Department, Darlinghurst

Going to the Messina Creative Department in Darlinghurst is – hands down – one of the most delightful things you can do in Sydney. You walk in wondering, “is a seven-course dessert degustation really a wise move?” and walk out so cheerfully light-headed and un-anchored by gravity that you could basically be a balloon float. […]

New podcast – Glen Goodwin, Bentley Restaurant & Bar, Monopole, Yellow

The band Kiss has played a surprising role in Glen Goodwin’s career. A love of the group led to his first job, as delivery boy to restaurateurs such as Neil Perry. It also played a pivotal part in how he ended up in New York. He worked there for 12 years – with bosses such […]

New podcast – Ibrahim Kasif, Stanbuli

“The fire was creeping up on me,” says Ibrahim Kasif. “It was pretty scary.” He was working at Porteno – on what was meant to be a normal day – when smoke began to billow through the atrium. He headed up to to the roof to check for problems – and found it raging with […]

Clementine’s, Pyrmont

From the “I’m glad you exist” files is Clementine’s in Pyrmont. Sure, the menu is as tight and tiny as the space, but it proves you don’t have to go blockbuster big to make a point. My fave thing here is the Belluci ($10), which is a mushroom thyme sub that’s just an excellent transit […]

New podcast – Helen Yee, Grab Your Fork

Helen Yee is one of Sydney’s OG food bloggers. Even unreformed blog haters probably make an exception for her site, Grab Your Fork, which she started back in 2004 – before the iPhone was even invented, let alone Twitter or Instagram. Since then, Grab Your Fork has been listed as one of the world’s 50 […]

Bar Brosé, Darlinghurst

If you were playing time-keeper, you’d notice that Bar Brosé has made a blazing impression in the short spell it’s been open. In just over three months, it’s scored a near-perfect record of good notices from pretty much every food-fixated outlet you can think of. Plus, head chef Analiese Gregory’s poulet vin jaune d’Australie has already […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.

About

This is a blog about eating and drinking in Sydney, Australia (with the odd cross-border or off-topic detour). BYO appetite.
