New podcast – Kylie Millar, Pei Modern

Kylie Millar has a masters of physiotherapy – and has even worked with the Sydney Swans AFL team! – but that’s probably not why you’ve heard of her. She’s done time at Mugaritz in Spain, which is ranked no. 6 on the World’s Best Restaurants list, and also has worked as a pastry chef at […]

PizzAperta, The Star, Pyrmont

Don’t expect a carb blowout at PizzAperta, Stefano Manfredi’s new pizzeria at The Star in Pyrmont. You’ll notice that the bases aren’t just impenetrable banks of dough, but rather a light and springy support system for the smart, measured toppings that power each slice. Manfredi has made a big talking point about the flour he’s using […]

Burger Project, Sydney

You would think that Burger Project had a bulletproof formula: a fast-food joint in World Square, created with the top-grade pedigree of Neil Perry. Accessible prices, high-calibre produce, a worthy nod to sustainability, with a portion of proceeds redirected to charity. Just hand out the gold stars already, what isn’t there to like? I was […]

New podcast – Kerby Craig, Ume

As a 15 year old, Kerby Craig was fascinated by the world of restaurants – seeing a chef breakdancing in the middle of service (!) confirmed for him that this was the industry that he wanted to work in. By accident, he ended up at the original Tetsuya’s as a teenage apprentice chef and, after […]

Sunday Brunch, Bar H, Surry Hills

Here’s an excellent way to jumpstart your Sunday – try the new brunch menu at Bar H in Surry Hills. Bring a supersized appetite, because the extensive menu is designed to ruin strict diets and make you want to order enthusiastically. There’s none of the standard-issue eggs/toast/muesli cliches – in fact, Bar H has taken […]

Veggie Patch Diner, Paddington

Some people aren’t for settling down, but I’m glad that the much-loved Veggie Patch Van has a spin-off that’s permanently in the park position: its new project, the Veggie Patch Diner, recently opened in Five Ways, Paddington. There’s no need to chase or tailgate this offshoot to get your fix of the Veggie Patch’s vegetarian […]

Mama’s Buoi, Surry Hills

What an accidental time trip: at Mama’s Buoi in Surry Hills, I instantly reconnected with the home-cooked Vietnamese flavours I grew up with – not something I expected on a fast-gentrifying corner of the inner-city, of all places. The Coconut Tamarind Curry ($15), soaked up with a crusty baguette, reminded me of the crumb trails […]

ACME, Rushcutters Bay

Calling your restaurant ACME is some ballsy move. Sure, it’s a convenient merger of people’s initials – taking the first names of everyone involved (Andy Emerson, Cam Fairbairn, Mitch Orr, Ed Loveday) and like a killer Scrabble ploy, reshuffling everything into a slick word that scores you a lot of kudos. But the title is […]

New podcast – Hetty McKinnon, Arthur Street Kitchen

Hetty McKinnon is the creative force – and salad-making ace – behind Arthur Street Kitchen. Her one-woman business saw her taking lunch orders from locals, creating meals from scratch at her Surry Hills home, and personally delivering these salads every Thursday and Friday on her bike. To pull this off, Hetty had to single-handedly cook […]

Gelato Messina Dessert Bar, Darlinghurst

The best-looking construction site in Sydney has to be the new Gelato Messina Dessert Bar in Darlinghurst. Lit up by neon glitz and filled with multi-colour rows of ‘assembly parts’ (fudges, jellies, sweets galore) and carnival-style equipment (a fairy-floss machine, a popcorn incubator), this build-your-own sundae establishment is a sugar-fuelled delight. In fact, it’s basically […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.

About

This is a blog about eating and drinking in Sydney, Australia (with the odd cross-border or off-topic detour). BYO appetite.
