Japanese in Chinatown

I really like the idea of food re-sparking your interest in your own city. Especially when it happens by chance. So, on Friday, by complete accident, I ended up near the night markets in Chinatown. Of course, I followed the spotlights and tarpaulins to where the action was. It was pretty quiet and small to […]

Vargabar, Newtown

When you first start going out with someone, one of the nicest things is meeting their group of friends. You’re introduced to a ready-made group of pretty amazing people, without having to go through the years-in-the-making work of finding them from the unknown crowd, one by one, right from scratch. If number one spot goes […]

Holiday hunger

“They sat with their backs to the industrial estate and let themselves get hungry.” That’s a line from a story by Roddy Doyle that ran in The New Yorker a while back. I like it because it reminds me of how often – when you’re stuck somewhere boring on holiday – you spend so much […]

In hibernation: Sobo, Bondi

The Hare and The Tortoise sets a really bad example for people with appetites. For ages and ages, I’d been meaning to table-hop to Sobo in Bondi. I was especially tempted by their Breakfast Tasting Plate for Two, which dished up blueberry pancakes with eggs, corn fritters and more – a bonus when menus are […]

Momentary diversion

Here’s a slight distraction – like someone knocking at your door when you’re about to sit down for dinner. I’ve just started another blog (or two!). One is semi (or fractionally) food related. You can get all mouseclicky with it over here. It’s called Recommended Daily Intake and is all about asking people what their […]

Le Pain Quotidien, Surry Hills

Sadly, I’m not one of those bright, perky people who gets all hopped up about leaving the house at 6AM to “make the most of the morning”. I’m a sleepaholic, so am always pushing my luck being bedsnug for as long as possible. The only thing that can break me out of this pillowy trance […]

Waging War At The Table

No self-respecting teen film can exist without those two special words: “FOOD FIGHT!” It seems like school cafeterias are purpose-built just for those moments of pie-flying, table-turning chaos. (Lunch orders are a lower priority.) These following designs, I think, would put the class back into class room squabble. Or, in any case, be handy for […]

Kick Out The Jams

It was knives out on Saturday morning when I had friends over for Kick Out The Jams 2008. The name sounds like an outdoor festival dedicated to anthemic guitar-shredding, but really it was an excuse to grill some bread and slather on the fruity spreads and weird condiments that I bought overseas. (How punk, I […]

Pencilicious

I always love those moments when you’re desk-deep in work and while checking something, you accidentally mouse-stumble across something inspired. Yesterday I was sub-editing a story on Japanese designers and came across a clever collab that cool firm Nendo did with Japanese patissier Tsujiguchi Hironobu. These chocolate pencils come with a special sharpener to create […]

Cafe Norita, Sydney

If Betty & Veronica lived in Chinatown, I think they’d hang out at Norita Cafe. Located in the Sydney’s Spanish “quarter” (could a quarter be any smaller?), it seems to be a magnet for young folks wanting to sip on freshly-blitzed pineapple juices, crash out on an oversized couch and break out the board games. […]

About

Hi, I'm Lee Tran Lam. When not blogging with my mouth full, I'm usually writing, presenting Local Fidelity on FBi radio, making zines, producing podcasts or continually breaking promises about how I really am gonna get through my book pile one day.

All the good pictures on this blog are by photography ace (and patient boyfriend), Will Reichelt, (all the dodgy ones can be credited to me)!

The lovely banner is by friend and ultra-talented illustrator Grace Lee.

This site redesign was made possible by the next-level generosity and expertise of Daniel Boud, whose code-tinkering ways are only outranked by his seriously inspired way with a camera.

You can read more about my co-conspirators here.

This is a blog I do for pure fun and zero influence – there's no sponsorship, sneaky advertorial or advertising. I pay for all the food mentioned, 'cos it seems the ethical thing to do.

About

This is a blog about eating and drinking in Sydney, Australia (with the odd cross-border or off-topic detour). BYO appetite.
